Kartika be spared from caning

It is a real shame that everywhere in the world (with the exception of some islamic countries) that canning is still used as a form of punishment, with the intention of deterent.

Have they not moved from the medieval age to modern psychology and human development, that to encourage good personal habits and value is by persuasion and education?

Why punish Kartina when she already paid the heavy fine of RM5,000.

Canning 6 times is almost equivalent to that imposed on rapists depending on the severity of the violence perpetrated on the victim.

Who has Kartina violated and what pain has she caused on anyone? Besides having her two children to bear the thought that their poor mother would be canned soon, what impression would other communities in Malaysia and the world think of the islamic laws here?

PRM sympathies are with her and her children and may they be protected from the evils of men who use punitive punishment in the name of God's law.

May she be spared and set free from canning and imprisonment..

(Kartina, 32 a model, from Sungai Siput Perak and married to a Singaporean, was arrested during a raid at a hotel lounge in Cherating Kuantan Pahang about 11.40 pm on July 11 2008 for breaching Syariah Law which forbids Muslims from drinking alkohol. On July 20 , the Syariah High Court of Kuantan fined her RM 5000 or 3 years jail and 6 strokes of caning after she pleaded guilty.

The caning sentence was the first of its kind on a woman in Malaysia.

Kartika refused to appeal the sentence, and had instead asked for her punishment to be carried out as soon as possible and in public. The case has attracted international attention, and the story was highlighted by major networks and the news carried online by a dozen agencies descended at her home to cover the event on Monday 24 August 2009, when she was supposed to be escorted by 1 males and 2 females religious officials from her father's house in Sungai Siput to Kajang Women's prison in Selangor for caning, but on leaving the house 200 metres, the van ferrying her turned back because an ordered was given that her punishment had been deferred till after the fasting month of Ramadan, the muslims fasting month began on 22 August 2009.

Prime Minister Najib Razak appealed to her to make an appeal to the Syariah Appeal Court. On writing this short account and in response to the appeal amde by PM Najib, Kartika had rejected appeal. --26-08-09)
