PARTI RAKYAT MALAYSIA (PRM) CONDEMNS I.S.A. ARRESTS

Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) strongly condemns the Barisan Nasional government of using the Internal Security Act (ISA) to detain Malaysia Today’s editor Raja Petra Kamaruddin, Sin Chew jit Poh reporter Tan Hoon Cheng and Seputeh MP cum Selangor State Councillor Teresa Kok and to send show cause letter to the Sun , Sin Chew Jit Poh and Suara Keadilan .

PRM demands that all ISA detainees to be charged in an open court , or otherwise to be released unconditionally and immediately if the BN government possesses reasons and evidence to detain them.

The BN government especially the BN backbone UMNO should not repeat history by resorting to the ISA detention to divert attentions on the intense internal power struggle brewing in UMNO , and to divert the people’s demand to clean the corrupted systems, and the dissatisfaction over the unreasonable abrupt rise in prices. The BN government should not use the ISA detention as a means to curb the voices of the people, freedom of speech and to create a sense of fear in the mind of the ordinary citizens.

By doing so, it will not be able to solve the UMNO internal problem, and the people’s strong anger towards the BN’s incompetence governing of the country, it will make the already deteriorated economy and the other social problems even worse, at the mean time the detention will frighten away local and foreign investments.

The use of the ISA to detain Sin Chew Jit Poh’s reporter Tan Hoon Cheng related to a news report is uncalled for and utterly unacceptable, for the apology made by the Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Najib Abdul Razak obviously testifies that the detention of Tan Hoon Cheng is unjust and she has been made a scapegoat. As for Raja Petra, he has been brought to court and charged, and according to news report, the basis for the detention of Teresa Kok is not correctly reported.

PRM calls upon the BN government to heed the people’s voice, seriously look into the message that the people has passed on on the March 8 general election, accept the facts that the people of Malaysia want an open and democratic society, the eradications of corruption, and to seek solutions to the problem of fast rising prices. The ISA should not be use to divert people’s attention.
